Gym banners do most of their work in January, but a smart studio runs them year round. The new mum walking past with a buggy, the office worker on the commute home, the student on a Sunday all need a reason to push the door open today.
We print fitness banners for gyms, yoga studios, pilates reformers and CrossFit boxes across London. This is what works, sized for British high streets and weather.
5ft x 3ft PVC banner with a clear membership offer and a time-limited trial works best. Use a member photo, the offer in big numerals, and a QR code to your booking page. 510gsm hemmed with brass eyelets, Β£42 to Β£50, same day from Putney.
The trial offer is your headline
Banners that say JOIN NOW underperform banners that say 7 DAY FREE TRIAL or FIRST CLASS FREE. People in the deciding stage want a low-commitment way in, not a 12-month direct debit on day one.
Set the trial duration based on your retention math. If you convert 40% of week-1 trialists into members, run a week. If you convert 60% of day-1 trialists into members, a single class free is enough.
Set a fixed trial offer for at least one full quarter rather than rotating offers every fortnight. Inconsistent offers train passers-by to wait for a better one. The studios with the highest banner-driven conversion run the same offer for 12 weeks before testing a new one.
Trial offers ranked by conversion
FIRST CLASS FREE pulls highest foot traffic. 7 DAY FREE PASS converts highest to membership. Β£1 FIRST MONTH works for budget gyms. 3 SESSIONS FOR Β£10 works for pilates and reformer studios where unit cost is higher.
Photo choice: real members beat stock
Stock photos of perfect bodies in branded gym kit read as fake from across the road. A real member, mid-class, with a sweat patch and a slight smile, converts dramatically better.
Get signed model releases before any banner shoot. A simple half-page form covering the studio name, the member name, the date, and a tick box for use across print and digital is enough.
Copy and call to action
Top line: studio name or category (YOGA, PILATES, BOXING, F45, REFORMER). Middle: the trial offer in giant text. Bottom: how to claim (SCAN QR / TEXT TRIAL TO XXX / WALK IN TODAY).
Skip the timetable on the banner. Timetables go out of date and clutter the message. A QR code linking to your current schedule keeps everything fresh.
QR code rules
Print QR codes at minimum 5cm x 5cm on a banner. Smaller does not scan from 2 metres away. Use high contrast (black on white, never on a photo). Test scan the printed proof before you hang it, every time.
JOIN NOW underperforms FIRST CLASS FREE every time. Lower the entry friction.
Where to hang gym banners around the studio
Above the entrance is obvious. Behind the studio if it faces a busy road or rail line is the second win. Most gyms miss this. A 5ft x 3ft banner on the back wall of a Wandsworth studio can be seen from 300 train commuters an hour during peak.
Inside the studio, behind the reception desk, a banner with class names and times printed sells the membership during the trial week. Inside banners last for years, so spend a bit more on a heavier 540gsm PVC.

Seasonal banner cycles
January resolution season runs from Boxing Day to mid February. Refresh banners in mid December and run the January push. April to May is the summer-body push. September is the back-to-routine window. November is corporate Christmas package season.
Plan four banner changes a year. At Β£42 to Β£50 each, the annual banner budget for a studio is Β£200, well below most marketing line items.
Real members, mid-class, with a sweat patch convert better than any stock photo.
Window vinyls and indoor banners
Outdoor banners convert street traffic. Indoor banners convert trial members. A 6ft x 2ft banner inside the studio listing class names, times and the booking link helps the first-class visitor decide to commit.
Window vinyls (one-way vision film printed with class times) double as advertising and privacy screen. They cost more than a banner up front (Β£100 to Β£250 for a 2m run) but last five years and look more polished than tape-up posters.
Set a clear ROI target for each banner refresh. If a 50 GBP banner needs to bring in two new members at 70 GBP a month, the breakeven is one month. Most studios that hit this target run banners that name a specific class type, a specific time, and a specific trial offer rather than generic JOIN US copy.
