Quick answer: solid vinyl wins for 9 out of 10 banners. Mesh wins specifically when wind exposure is an issue (scaffolding, exposed fences, stadium perimeters). Here's the detailed comparison.
Quick Comparison Table
| Feature | Solid Vinyl (510 GSM) | Mesh (350 GSM) |
|---|---|---|
| Colour sharpness | Excellent | Good (slightly softer) |
| Indoor use | Yes | No (light bleeds through) |
| Wind tolerance | Up to 40 mph | Up to 60+ mph |
| Scaffolding / exposed sites | Not recommended | Required |
| Outdoor lifespan | 2 5 years | 12 18 months (exposed) |
| Price per sqft | Baseline | Similar or slightly lower |
| Weight per mΒ² | ~500g | ~350g |
| Double sided look | Excellent (print both sides) | Difficult (see through) |
When Mesh Wins
1. Scaffolding
Non negotiable. Solid vinyl on scaffolding is a safety issue. How to attach a banner to scaffolding.
2. Fence lines in windy areas
Football grounds, construction perimeters, market fences. Mesh stops wind catch.
3. Tall / large banners (above 2m tall)
Once you're above 2m, wind load on solid vinyl becomes structurally significant.
4. Permanent outdoor fixtures
If it's staying up for months + it's exposed, mesh outlasts solid vinyl because it doesn't stress its fixings.
5. Over flood prone areas
Rain passes through mesh rather than pooling.
When Vinyl Wins
1. Indoor events
Mesh looks washed out indoors light shines through it. Solid vinyl is the go to for conferences, trade shows, receptions.
2. Sharp photo banners
Photos on mesh look slightly dotty up close (you see the perforation pattern). For photo banners especially close up viewing solid vinyl is better. See printing photos on banners.
3. Birthday / wedding banners
Nobody wants a semi transparent party banner. Go solid.
4. Shop fronts (sheltered)
If the banner is mounted flush against a wall or under an awning, wind isn't an issue solid vinyl is sharper and cheaper.
5. Double sided printing
Mesh can't do double sided effectively (you see through). If you need both sides to look independent, go solid.
The Perforation Trade Off
Mesh has approximately 35% open area. That means:
- +35% wind passes through
- 10 15% apparent colour saturation
- 20% apparent brightness
- +20% wind survival
For viewing at 20ft+, the perforation is invisible. Close up, you can see it.
Price Comparison
At BPSD, mesh and vinyl are priced similarly. See full price list. The deciding factor is almost never cost it's location and wind.
Our Recommendation
95% of customers who ask "should I get mesh?" actually need solid vinyl. The other 5% are scaffold jobs or exposed perimeter banners. If you tell us where it's going, we'll tell you which.
