British weather is brutal on cheap banners. Here's what actually survives outdoors.
510 GSM PVC with solvent or latex inks, heat welded hems, brass eyelets. That combination survives 3 to 5 years in sheltered outdoor use and 2 to 3 in full sun. Exposed scaffold, go mesh.
Material Thickness, 510 GSM is the Sweet Spot
Cheap banners are 300β400 GSM. They tear in moderate wind. Our standard is 510 GSM heavy-duty PVC, substantially thicker, much stronger.
UV-Resistant Inks
Water-based inks fade in months. Solvent or latex inks (what we use) last 2β5 years outdoors.
Heat-Welded Hems
Glue fails in cold rain; stitching wears through. Heat-welded hems fuse the material, stronger than the original vinyl.
The hem does more work than the print. If it fails in a storm, the whole banner follows. Spec welded, always.
Brass vs Plastic Eyelets
Plastic eyelets crack in winter cold. Brass eyelets cost pennies more and last decades.
Mesh for Wind-Exposed Sites
Solid PVC catches wind like a sail. Mesh lets wind pass through, 6β12 month lifespan on scaffold wraps.
How to choose between solid and mesh
If the banner is higher than 1.5m in an exposed spot, or goes on scaffolding, choose mesh. Anywhere sheltered or shorter, solid PVC reads sharper.
Cheap materials are not cheap over three winters. Spec right once, save the reprint twice.
How Long Will It Actually Last?
| Location | Material | Realistic Lifespan |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor | PVC 510 GSM | 5+ years |
| Sheltered outdoor | PVC 510 GSM | 3β5 years |
| Full exposure | PVC 510 GSM | 2β3 years |
| Scaffold/windy | Mesh 350 GSM | 6β12 months |
