Summer sale banners are one of the highest-return print items a London shop can order. They cost Β£36 to Β£60, they hang for six to eight weeks, and they can lift footfall significantly during what is usually a slower trading season for non-food retail.
This guide covers what makes a summer sale banner work, from headline copy to colour choices. Examples come from the kind of banners we print for shops in Putney, Chiswick, Hammersmith and Wimbledon from our Putney Heath studio.
For a summer sale banner, use a 5ft x 3ft 510gsm PVC banner with a single bold percentage and a date. Yellow on royal blue reads cleanest at distance, around Β£42 from our Putney studio. Order by 11am for same-day collection. Keep copy to seven words or fewer.
What Makes a Summer Sale Banner Work
Three things. A single dominant number, a deadline or date, and high contrast colours. Up to 50% Off, Sale Ends 31 July. That is the whole banner. The brain processes that in under two seconds, which is all you get from someone walking past.
Bad summer sale banners try to do too much. Multiple percentages, several product categories, social handles, opening hours, all crammed into a 5ft space. Everything competes and nothing wins.
Sale Banner Sizes
Most independent London shops do well with a 5ft x 2ft or 5ft x 3ft banner above the door. Larger shops or those set back from the pavement need 6ft x 3ft or 8ft x 4ft to read at a distance.
Window vs Above-Door Banners
Window banners catch the shoppers already on the pavement and curious enough to look in. Above-door banners catch people who would otherwise walk straight past. If you only print one, go above-door. If you print two, the window banner can carry a secondary message like Membership 10% Extra.
A-Frame and Pavement Banners
An A-frame holds a 3ft x 2ft banner cleanly and can sit on the pavement outside if your local council permits. These work especially well in Chiswick and Hammersmith High Street where pavement traffic moves slowly.
One number, one date, two colours. That is a summer sale banner that earns its money on the first Saturday.
Colour Choices for Summer Sale Banners
Yellow on royal blue reads cleanest from across the road. Red on white is the traditional sale palette and works well, but it is also what every chain store uses, so you blend in. White on hot pink is more distinctive without sacrificing readability.
Avoid black on red and red on black, both look muddy from 30 feet. Avoid pure gradient backgrounds, they often print darker than they look on screen.

Headline Copy That Converts
Working examples include Up to 50% Off, Summer Sale Now On, Big Sale Ends Sunday, Half Price Selected Lines, and Summer Clearance In Store. Each is short, specific and creates a reason to come in today rather than next week.
Avoid Sale Items From and other open-ended phrases. The shopper does not know what From means until they walk in, and the banner has not done its job.
If the message takes longer than two seconds to understand, the banner has already lost the sale.
Lead Times and Reuse
Order three to five days ahead of your sale start so you have time to hang it and photograph for social. We print same-day on artwork in by 11am if you need it faster. A 510gsm PVC banner with hemmed edges and brass eyelets will handle two summers stored properly between uses, sometimes three.
If you skip the year and the specific dates, the same banner reuses indefinitely. Summer Sale Now On with no year on it works for any July or August. Date-specific banners get tossed after one season, so the wording choice changes the cost-per-use dramatically.
Sun fade on summer sale banners is the most common reason for needing a reprint. Reds and oranges fade fastest, blacks and dark blues hold up well. If you want a banner that comes back for three seasons, choose deep base colours and put the brighter accent colour in the smaller text rather than the background.
