Backlit Banner Printing Explained

Full guide to designing and ordering a shop front banner that actually drives footfall. Size, message, material, fixing.

Most customers asking about banners are after a standard PVC banner for the outside of a shop or event. A smaller group are asking about backlit banners, which is a different product entirely. These are designed to be lit from behind, usually inside a lightbox or illuminated sign frame, and they need specific film material rather than standard PVC.

This guide explains what a backlit banner is, where it is used, and what to ask for if you think that is what you need. Examples come from work we have done for venues in Soho, Mayfair, Covent Garden and Westminster from our Putney Heath studio.

Quick Answer

Backlit banners are printed on translucent film designed for lightbox or illuminated sign frames. They are typically used indoors in retail lightboxes, cinema poster frames or illuminated shopfront signage. Prices start higher than standard PVC because the film and ink density are different.

What a Backlit Banner Actually Is

A backlit banner is a print on translucent polyester or PVC film that allows light to pass through from behind while still showing the design clearly when lit. The ink is laid down at higher density than a standard banner so that colour stays saturated when the lightbox is on.

These are not the same as standard PVC banners hung in front of a window. A standard banner blocks the light entirely. A backlit banner is designed for one purpose, to live inside an illuminated frame where the light source is behind the print.

Where Backlit Banners Are Used

Common places. Cinema poster frames, retail lightboxes inside department stores, illuminated menu boards outside restaurants, transport advertising at stations, and illuminated shopfront signage above pharmacies, salons and high-end retail.

Backlit banners are almost always indoor or weather-protected. The lightbox or frame protects the film from rain and UV. A backlit film left exposed outdoors will not last.

Retail Lightboxes

Most retail lightboxes use a standard A1 or A0 size opening. We can print backlit banners to fit specific frame openings. Bring the internal frame dimensions when you order so the print fits cleanly.

Illuminated Menu Boards

Restaurants in Soho, Covent Garden and Mayfair often use illuminated menu boards in their windows. Backlit film keeps the menu readable in evening trade when the sun has gone and the inside of the restaurant is the brightest thing on the street.

Backlit film is for lightboxes. Standard PVC is for everywhere else. They are not interchangeable.

Material Differences

Standard PVC banner: solid, opaque, 510gsm material with hemmed edges and brass eyelets. Designed to be viewed in reflected light.

Backlit film: translucent polyester or thin PVC, no hems or eyelets typically, designed to be cut to size and slotted into a frame. Inks are laid down heavier so that colours stay strong when the lightbox is on. The print looks slightly washed out viewed off the lightbox, that is normal, it pops when lit.

What to Ask For When Ordering

Three things. First, the frame opening size, not the external frame size. Second, whether the frame is edge-lit LED or backlit fluorescent, both work with the same film but the brightness differs. Third, the orientation, portrait or landscape, which affects how the file is laid out.

If you are unsure which frame you have, take a photo of the back of the lightbox showing how the existing graphic is held in. We can usually tell from that what film type and size you need.

Bring the internal frame opening size, not the external dimensions. That single detail saves a reprint.

Backlit vs Standard Banner

If your sign is not lit from behind, you do not need a backlit banner. Standard 510gsm PVC is cheaper, more durable and looks correct. If your sign is a lightbox or illuminated frame, you do need backlit film, standard PVC will block the light and look black at night.

An easy test: switch off the lightbox during the day. If the existing graphic still looks vibrant in reflected light, it is backlit film designed to work both lit and unlit. If it goes muddy or flat the moment the light turns off, that is normal for backlit film and confirms the right product type for the replacement.

Pricing depends on size, but as a rough guide, a backlit banner is typically 50 to 80 percent more per square foot than equivalent PVC. The trade-off is a print designed for one specific lighting situation that no other material handles correctly. Send us the frame size and a photo and we will quote from our Putney Heath studio.
