Sports Club Banner Ideas and Pitch-Side Rules

Full guide to designing and ordering a shop front banner that actually drives footfall. Size, message, material, fixing.

Design TipsPublished 2026 04 12 Β· Banner Printing Same Day

Football, rugby, cricket and netball clubs across London all need banners for the same handful of reasons: club identity, sponsor recognition, tournament wayfinding, and presentation day. The constraints are different from a high street shop because the pitch has its own rules and the weather is harsher.

We print for grassroots and semi-pro clubs across south London. Here is what works on the touchline and what the governing bodies actually require.

Quick Answer

Pitch-side sponsor banners are typically 8ft x 3ft (2.4m x 0.9m), printed on mesh PVC to reduce wind load. Club banners are 5ft x 3ft. Use 510gsm PVC, brass eyelets every 50cm, and tie down with cable ties or rope on the post-rail.

Pitch-side sponsor banner standards

Sponsor banners around grassroots pitches are typically 8ft x 3ft to match the post and rail fencing common at London council pitches. Bigger looks awkward on a small pitch and smaller gets lost.

The FA does not regulate grassroots sponsor banner sizes directly, but most county leagues require banners to be set behind the technical area and not obscure assistant referee sightlines. Check your county FA bulletin before installing.

Junior club banners need bigger type than senior club banners because the audience includes parents reading from across a pitch while watching their child. Step up the type size by 20 to 30% on junior banners and the readability improves dramatically.

Mesh vs solid PVC for pitch-side

On exposed pitches at Wandsworth Common, Clapham Common, Battersea Park or any of the playing fields with prevailing south westerlies, mesh banners outperform solid PVC. Mesh lets wind through and the eyelets stay put. Solid PVC on a windy pitch tears within a season.

Club identity and matchday banners

A club entrance banner welcomes visiting teams and parents. Crest, club name, founded date, league. Size 5ft x 3ft is standard at a community pitch or 8ft x 3ft if you have a dedicated clubhouse facia.

Matchday score and fixture banners are smaller, 3ft x 2ft, and either get reprinted per fixture or use a chalkboard-style design with a wipeable laminate over the date area.

Tournament and presentation day banners

Junior tournaments need wayfinding banners (PITCH 1, PITCH 2, PARKING, REGISTRATION) plus a hero tournament banner near the clubhouse. Keep the wayfinding plain (black on yellow, sans-serif, age 6 reading distance) and put the design effort into the hero banner.

Presentation day banners are a one-off but get used as backdrops for trophy photos. A 6ft x 4ft step and repeat with the club crest, season, and sponsor logos becomes the photo every parent posts.

Step and repeat backdrop specs

Use a tension fabric on aluminium frame at 6ft x 4ft minimum, or a 6ft x 4ft PVC banner clamped to a Heras fence at the clubhouse entrance. Repeat the crest and sponsor logos in a grid pattern. Keep contrast high because indoor photo flash washes pale colours out.

Mesh banners on a windy London pitch outlast solid PVC by two full seasons.

Sponsor logo placement and sizing rules

Lead sponsor gets a banner of their own at 8ft x 3ft. Co-sponsors get half size at 4ft x 3ft. Supporting sponsors get a panel on a multi-sponsor banner. Document this hierarchy in the sponsor pack so there is no argument at the AGM.

Logos at minimum 30cm tall on an 8ft x 3ft banner are readable from across the pitch. Anything smaller is wasted print.

Storage and reuse between seasons

Roll banners, do not fold. Folded banners crease and the creases hold colour fade. A cardboard tube from a fabric shop costs nothing and adds three seasons to the life. Store in the clubhouse, not the boot of the chairman's car.

At the start of each season check sponsor banners for tears, fading and sponsor changes. Budget Β£200 to Β£400 for refresh prints. Most clubs reprint two to four banners per season as sponsors rotate.

Document the sponsor logo hierarchy in the sponsor pack. It saves an argument at the AGM.

Cup matches, finals and special fixture banners

Cup runs and finals create one-off banner opportunities. A WELCOME TO THE CUP FINAL banner at the gate, a sponsor takeover for the day, a fan zone backdrop for selfies. These cost Β£200 to Β£500 in print but lift the club profile in the local community for years.

Plan these in advance even if the cup run is uncertain. Hold a design template on file with placeholders for date and opponent, ready to fill in and print same day when the draw is made.
