Music Venue and Gig Banner Ideas for London Promoters

Full guide to designing and ordering a shop front banner that actually drives footfall. Size, message, material, fixing.

A music venue's banner is part of the night's atmosphere before anyone has walked through the door. The line outside, the photos people take of the door, the regulars who walk past and decide to come back next Friday, all of it starts with how the front of the venue looks.

We print for independent venues, promoters and tour managers across London. This is what works for gig nights, residencies and album launches.

Quick Answer

5ft x 3ft PVC banner above the door is the standard. Hero artwork or photo at 70% of the banner, headliner name biggest, support names smaller, date and door time clear. Reprint per gig or use a generic venue banner plus a date-specific A-frame.

Per-gig versus generic venue banner

Two approaches work. Smaller venues print one banner per gig and replace weekly. It looks alive, gets shared on socials, and matches the poster campaign. Larger venues run a permanent venue banner above the door and use a chalkboard or A-frame for tonight's gig.

Per-gig banner economics: at Β£42 to Β£50 a banner, a venue running three gigs a week spends Β£6,000 to Β£7,800 a year on banners. Worth it if the photo budget is already there. Cheaper if you batch print a quarter at once.

Sold out banners are a marketing win, not just an information notice. A SOLD OUT overlay on a gig banner outside the venue signals demand and pulls would-be attendees to the next show. Print SOLD OUT stickers in batches and overlay rather than reprinting the full banner.

Copy hierarchy for gig banners

Top: headliner name, biggest. Middle: support acts, smaller. Bottom: date, door time, ticket price or sold out. Venue name and logo sits in a corner small enough not to compete.

Resist the urge to list five support acts. The headliner sells the ticket. Naming the openers in tiny text helps no one. Keep them off the banner and on the poster.

Tour banner template

Tour banners for touring acts: BAND NAME / TOUR TITLE / VENUE NAME AND DATE / DOOR TIME. The band name carries the whole banner. The tour title sits as supporting line. The venue and date personalise to the city.

Photography and artwork choices

If the act has strong promotional photography, use it. A photo of the band at 70% of the banner with name and date overlaid is the strongest format. If the act has weaker imagery, use a typographic banner with the name as the visual hero.

Album art works well for album launches. A clean reproduction of the cover with VENUE / DATE / TIME overlaid feels official and matches what fans see on streaming services.

The headliner sells the ticket. Naming the openers in tiny text helps no one.

Where the banner sits at the venue

Above the door is obvious. Around the side at the queue position is a second win for big nights where photos get taken in the queue. Inside the venue, behind the merch desk, a banner sells the next show before the current one ends.

If your venue has a beer garden or smoking area, a 3ft x 2ft banner there showing this week's lineup catches regulars during the gig and books them for next week.

Residency and recurring night banners

Residencies need different banners. The night brand (CLUB NIGHT NAME, RESIDENCY NIGHT, JAZZ TUESDAYS) sits permanent, with a smaller insert panel for the specific date and act.

A laminated PVC pocket on the main banner with a slot for an A4 weekly insert works well for venues running multiple residencies. Print the main banner once, swap A4 inserts per night.

A residency banner with a swappable A4 insert prints once and runs the year.

Material and fixing for venue use

510gsm PVC for outdoor venue banners. For indoor display banners that live on the wall for years, 540gsm or 610gsm holds up better against bar wear, brushes from patrons and the occasional spilled drink.

Fixing to a Victorian terrace venue facade: brass eyelets and stainless steel hooks into screws fixed to the brick joints, not the brick itself. Some London venues have heritage facade restrictions. Check with your landlord.

Album release and merch tie-in banners

Album launch nights deserve their own banner treatment. The album cover at hero size, the act name, the launch date, and the venue. Fans who see the banner outside take a photo and post it, which becomes promotional content for the act.

If the venue sells merch on the night, a smaller banner near the merch table (TONIGHT ONLY / SIGNED VINYL / SHIRTS Β£20) lifts revenue per attendee. The act's tour manager usually covers the print cost if you ask before the booking.
