Independent cafes and coffee shops in London live or die on first-time customers walking in from the pavement. A clear, well-designed banner above the door or in the window is one of the cheapest ways to convert passers-by into regulars, and it works just as well in Putney as it does in Soho.
This guide covers banner ideas, sizes and messages that work for cafes and coffee shops. Examples come from the kind of banners we have printed for independent operators across Putney, Clapham, Hackney, Islington and Notting Hill from our Putney Heath studio.
A 5ft x 2ft 510gsm PVC banner above the door is the standard cafe banner, around Β£36 from our Putney studio. Use the cafe name, a short offer like Fresh Coffee or Open from 7am, and one signature product such as Brunch Until 2pm. Order by 11am for same-day collection.
What Cafe Banners Need to Do
Three jobs. Identify the cafe at distance, tell passers-by what is on offer, and signal opening times. Most cafe banners try to be brand pieces and skip the practical detail, which is the wrong way round. The brand voice can live inside on the menu, the banner needs to do the heavy lifting on the pavement.
Coffee is impulse trade. Someone walking past at 8am decides on the next 10 seconds whether they want a coffee. The banner is what makes that decision.
Cafe Banner Ideas
Working examples we have printed: Open from 7am, Fresh Coffee and Brunch, Specialty Coffee Putney, Brunch Until 2pm, Free Wi-Fi Quiet Tables, Takeaway Window Open, Dog Friendly Cafe. Each gives the passer-by a specific reason to step inside today.
Early-Morning Cafes
Lead with opening time. From 7am, Open Early, Pre-Work Coffee. Commuters scan banners while walking to the bus or tube and the only question they have at 7.40am is whether you are open before them. Make the answer obvious.
Brunch and Weekend Cafes
Lead with brunch hours and one signature dish. Brunch Until 2pm, Eggs Benedict and Coffee, Bottomless Brunch Saturdays. Photos of food can work on a banner if they are tightly cropped and high resolution, otherwise stick to typography.
Cafe banners need to do practical work on the pavement, not brand work in design software. Save the brand voice for inside.
Colour and Style
Most independent cafes have a tight brand palette already. Stick to it on the banner. Cream, brown and burnt orange read warmly. Black and white is clean and reads at distance. Bright primary colours feel chain-store and rarely fit an independent cafe brand.
Avoid wood-effect or chalkboard-effect backgrounds on the banner itself. They look soft inside on the menu but print as a brown smudge at banner scale. Save them for the interior.
Cafe Banner Sizes and Uses
| Size | Best Use | Indicative Price |
|---|---|---|
| 3ft x 2ft | Window or A-frame | Β£31 |
| 4ft x 2ft | Narrow shop fascia | Β£34 |
| 5ft x 2ft | Above door, standard cafe | Β£36 |
| 5ft x 3ft | Larger cafe or brunch promotion | Β£42 |
| 6ft x 3ft | Wide frontage cafe | Β£48 |
Banner Placement
Above the door at 8 to 10 feet is the prime position. Window banners catch the shopper already considering a stop. A-frame banners on the pavement work well in slow-walking high streets like Clapham Old Town or Highgate. If you have outdoor seating, a small banner on the railing acts as a brand cue from across the road.
If your cafe opens before 8am, put that on the banner. Half of London is asking that exact question at 7.30am.
Lead Times and Material
510gsm PVC with hemmed edges and brass eyelets is the standard for outdoor cafe banners. Vinyl on glass works for window banners that need a clean stuck-down finish. We print same-day on artwork in by 11am from our Putney Heath studio, so a Friday morning order is up by Friday evening trade.
Most cafe banners last 18 months to 2 years before colour fade or hem wear shows. By that point your menu has usually moved on too, so the reprint cycle and the menu refresh tend to line up neatly.
If you run seasonal promotions like iced drinks in summer or mulled drinks in December, consider a second smaller A-frame banner that swaps with the season while the main fascia banner stays consistent. That gives you brand stability with seasonal flexibility for under Β£70 total.
Cafes with outdoor seating in summer benefit from a small banner on a nearby railing or fence advertising the seating itself. Outdoor Seating Available, Dog Friendly, or Garden Open Until 8pm gives passers-by a clear reason to step inside rather than walk past.
